Areas of Practice

For a well-prepared criminal defense attorney, trial starts long before a prosecutor reads the charges against you to a jury. It begins with a thorough investigation of the facts of your case; the filing of timely and well-reasoned pretrial motions to exclude prejudicial issues; and a clear theme that will communicate the salient points of your defense to a jury of your peers. Being represented by counsel who has the skill and experience to try a complex criminal case is invaluable to identifying pressure points for negotiation and triable issues.

White Collar Defense

When the government seeks to define the intent of your actions as criminal, but you have done nothing wrong, broken no law, and acted in a manner that you believe was sensible, we are here to help. We will help you gather the relevant facts and marshal the law in your defense. This work requires careful attention to detail and may involve the use of experts in multiple disciplines. Working with an attorney who understands business concepts, has the ability to simplify vast amounts of data into visuals and charts, and has the credibility to present these findings to prosecutors, judges and juries is crucial to your defense.

Sentencing + Mitigation

While about 90% of federal matters involve pleas of guilty, much work remains after the plea stage for a successful outcome. A carefully tailored mitigation plan and well-preserved issues at sentencing can have a life-altering impact on the disposition of your case.  Sentencing enhancements recommended by the Federal Sentencing Guidelines can result in years in prison for the unsophisticated litigant. Being represented by an attorney who understands how to deconstruct the Guidelines, argue against these enhancements and who can persuasively communicate sentencing alternatives to the court is critical to success.

Winning sometimes requires getting a thoughtful review of a lower court's decision. In those instances, having an attorney who is well versed in trial work but skilled in writing and presenting appellate arguments can mean the difference between years in jail and a more immediate release. Having an attorney who keeps pace with pending issues at the Supreme Court of the United States and other circuit courts that may have an indirect outcome on your case, and who understands how to craft and present appellate arguments, is key to your defense.

Civil Litigation and Tax Exempt, Not-for-Profit Services

Our office also handles select matters outside of criminal law. When a deal is not quite what you bargained for then you may have a business dispute that requires the assistance of a skilled litigator. Having assisted clients with business disputes, landlord/ tenant issues and consumer law claims, we can help. You can call on us to help with your civil litigation needs.

Also, most of us want to do good in this world and have a lasting impact on our communities. Turning these aspirations into reality, however, sometimes requires a bit more form and assistance. Whether you are contemplating starting a not-for-profit organization, foundation or would like to formalize an ongoing community-based project, we can help.

Having previously worked on projects surrounding the formation of a "Friends of" organization, the U.S.-arm of a foreign-based charity, the conversion of a private S corporation into a not-for-profit organization, and helping a state charitable organization obtain federal tax exempt status, we can match your aspirations with our experience.

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury ... to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense.
